"Chaverim" (The Jewish unity song) by David Bar-Cohn
    (Video Rated 3 Stars)
    Artist: Shemesh Music
    Description:
"Unity" is not about all of us coming to agreement religiously, politically or otherwise. It's about being able to *disagree* vehemently with someone, and yet still wanting the best for them, desiring their joy and seeking to alleviate their pain. If we can do this, even with our "opponents", not only will this create a culture of solution-building - it will cultivate the possibility for "Chaverim kol Yisrael" - where all Jews look out for one another, as friends do. Song and vocals by David Bar-Cohn Guitar by Bradley Fish Bass Guitar & Drums by David Epstein Produced by Shemesh Music (http://www.shemeshmusic.com) The video was filmed in Jerusalem, Winter 2008, and can be found on the Rebbetzin Tap DVD "Get Ready for Shabbos". (http://www.RebbetzinTap.com) COMMENTS POLICY: Only respectful comments will be posted, and that certainly excludes those denigrating any particular group. In keeping with the theme of the song, I urge you to act as "friends" here :-)

    Soul Bigger
    (Video Rated 3 Stars)
    Artist:
    Description:
Jewish Treats and @JewishTweets want to know if you're ready to make your "Soul Bigger" for the High Holidays? Follow us on Twitter! http://twitter.com/JewishTweets Visit our Facebook Page! http://facebook.com/JewishTreats A Project of the National Jewish Outreach Program (NJOP) http://njop.org Written and Directed by Brian Golub and Mike Kirsch of Unique New York Entertainment http://uniquenewyorkentertainment.com Choreographed by Mike Kirsch Learn more about the 3 T's of the High Holidays, Teshuva (Repentance), Tefilah (Prayer) and Tzedaka (Charity), with this post taken from our http://JewishTreats.org blog: The 3 Ts On Rosh Hashanah we declare: "But repentance, prayer and charity remove the evil of the decree!" In Hebrew, these constitute the 3 Ts: Teshuva, Tefilah and Tzedaka. Teshuva (repentance) a central theme of the High Holidays, means more than just saying "sorry." Teshuva, means recognizing one's errors and making an effort not to repeat them. In many ways, teshuva is a private act because one must be introspective to recognize one's own mistakes. Tefilah (prayer) is the acknowledgment of God as the King and Ruler of the universe. Tefilah is almost private, but not quite. It is a conversation between the person and God. Tzedaka (charity) is a critical step necessary to reverse an evil decree simply because it constitutes an action. The performance of this mitzvah affects the person giving, the person receiving, and its benefits often extend to others as well. Tzedaka is reaching out beyond one's self, and is thus a public act. Everything that a person does affects the world in multiple ways. It affects the person's relationship with him/herself, their relationship with the Divine and their relationship with their fellow human beings. The path to reversing the evil of the decree must therefore involve the private, the spiritual and the public spheres of our lives. Song Lyrics: SOUL BIGGER It's Rosh Hashanah, Oh, So Happy New Year Yeah...had some triflin' days for sure Oh, gotta make my Soul Bigger, Not much time Till Yom Kippur CHORUS: (It's Rosh Hashanah) Now I'm just tryin' to make my Soul Bigger (So happy new year) And I ain't messin' it's no joke joke. Pidyon Haben Ceremony
    (Video Rated 3 Stars)
    Artist:
    Description:
When the first-born baby boy is 30 days old, the pidyon haben (redeeming the son) ceremony takes place. Since the time of the exodus, when the Jewish first born were saved from the plague, they should have dedicated their lives to priestly service in the Temple. The Cohanim from the tribe of Levi took the place of the firstborn in the Temple. So, technically, the first-born must be redeemed by a Cohen for money, otherwise he would technically need to serve in the Temple with the Cohanim. The ceremony is conducted with 5 pieces of silver which are given by the father to the Cohen in order to redeem his son. The Cohen then gives the child a blessing. It is customary to adorn the baby with jewels along with sugar and garlic. Those present will take home the sugar and garlic and cook it in a meal with those who could not attend, and thereby partake in the spiritual merit of the event. As with all Jewish festivities... we end the ceremony with some wine and food! Mazel Tov

The Holy Land: To Whom Does It Belong? (Hebrew)
    (Video Rated 3 Stars)
    Artist:
    Description:
Yeshayahu Leibowitz and Israel Eldad debate "Who owns Israel? The Arabs or Jews?" Maalot 1982 Translation by daledheyalef First Guy: It is an issue close to our hearts, related to zionism. I come from a moshav here, close to Maalot. We have land which 30 years ago were occupied by the same Ishmaelites that this man (looks back) hates, and I am supposed to answer this Ishmaelite friend who tells me 'this land which you plow, i occupied it 30 yrs ago' in a friendly way he says it, "how do you explain the fact that you are plowing it now, and sometimes by my labor, you pay me or my friends to plow land that belongs to me". What do I tell this Arab who I am supposed to be living with in peace? I want there to be a day that he will sit with me as a friend rather than contemplate my destruction. Leibowitz: (roughly, he uses "big words" sorry if its not completely accurate) no nation has a right to any land. I am not only speaking on the right of jews to israel or the right of palestinians to the land they call palestine. I am asking: what is the right of Swedish people to Sweden? The answer is that they have no right to Sweden. However, eight million swedes live by the personal (lit. in their souls) knowledge that this land is the land of their nation. That is the relation of the Swedish people to Sweden. This relation is no deeper than any legal right. When there are legal rights you can make judgements, you can argue. We all know that there is an established group that make a living from this, arguing and making judgement on rights, namely judges. On personal knowledge/beliefs you cannot argue. (points to man who asked questions, says stuff i dont understund and then:) This not just between you and the arab, rather it is between the Israeli nation and the Palestinian nation who are both living in a situation where both are living by the personal belief that the land is theirs. Everyone must ask: well what now then? there are two options. That is to say really one option, only one of the two The difficulties of such a division will be, from all perspectives, tremendous. - Two choices, the third is nonexistent! - Total War. The entire world will back the arab side. - The alternative is partition to two states. I know, as do everyone else that this is not rational and it is not right/just. The difficulties following from such a partition will be tremendous. But, history cannot be changed. Yeshayahu Leibowitz and Israel Eldad debate "Who owns Israel? The Arabs or Jews?" Maalot 1982 Israel Eldad (b. 1910 as Israel Scheib in Podvolochisk, Galicia, d. 1996), was a Revisionist Zionist philosopher. He was an early member and later chief ideological strategist of the Lohamei Herut Yisrael (Fighters for the Freedom of Israel) or Lehi. Called By the British the Stern Gang. Philosophy Eldad did not believe that the creation of the state of Israel was the goal of Zionism. He advocated more forceful use of the Israel Defense Forces and opposed the inclusion of the word "defense" in the name of the army. He opposed ceding any land to the Arabs. Yeshayahu Leibowitz ( 1903-1994) was an Israeli philosopher and scientist noted for his outspoken and often controversial opinions on Jewish ethics, religion and politics. Political views An Orthodox Jew, Leibowitz was known primarily for his philosophical writings and scathing critique of Israeli values and national policy. His remarks shortly after the Lebanon War in 1982 accusing Israeli soldiers of "Judeo-Nazi" mentality provoked a public outcry. While such remarks led some to conclude that he was an anti-Zionist, Leibowitz repeatedly affirmed his belief in the validity of the Zionist endeavor, both in writing and in conversation, throughout his life.

Jews & Buddhism: Belief Amended, Faith Revealed
    (Video Rated 3 Stars)
    Artist:
    Description:
This film examines the dramatic surge of interest among American Jews in the spiritual teachings of Buddhism. Jews, who make up 2% of the population, account for some 30% of non-Asian American Buddhists. Many of them are among the leading expositors and scholars of Buddhism in America. In practice, traditional Jewish ritual and liturgy are being modified in synagogues and among individuals seeking to incorporate the teachings of Buddhism into their spiritual lives. Jews and Buddhism is the first film to interrogate in depth the reasons for this phenomenon, explore it in the context of 20th century Jewish-American life, and consider its impact on contemporary Jewish thought and practice. This documentary, named "...one of the outstanding documentaries of 1999." by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, is narrated by Sharon Stone, and includes rare footage of the Dalai Lama, spiritual leader of Tibet, as well as David Ben Gurion, Alan Ginsberg, Sylvia Boorstein, Rabbi Alan Lew, and many others. The film has appeared on PBS and the History channel as well as over 50 film festivals worldwide. In addition, it is in widespread educational distribution.
