Lesson Description:
When thinking about hip-hop feuds the infamous East Coast-West Coast rivalry of the late 1990s comes to mind. Less well known is an Israeli hip-hop dispute that took place over, of all things, Holocaust education. In commemoration of Yom HaShoah mainstream Israeli rapper Subliminal released the track, Adon Olam, Ad Matai?, featuring Grammy award winning Israeli violinist Miri Ben Ari. Furious with the portrayal of the Holocaust in the video and lyrics, underground Israeli rapper Sagol 59 recorded a response track entitled Shoah Business. This session seeks to find out what these two rappers were fighting about, and how this feud reflects the role of the Holocaust in forming Jewish-Israeli identity. 1938-9 Jewish Life in Cracow (Kazimierz) |
| |
Artist: | ||
Description: Jewish LIfe in Cracow (disctrict of Kazimierz) in ca 1938/39 NOTE: This is a documentary film (a set of the mini-clips) was taken ca 1939 by some uncredited visitor to Kazimierz - being the part of prewar Cracow, mostly inhabited by traditional Jewish community. After German aggression on Poland in September 1939 that colourful, busy and lively district of the city was turned into a nazi-controlled ghetto and finally - its inhabitants, murdered in situ or transported to death camps. In recent years, the Kazimierz area is being reconstructed and recultivated and is slowly coming back to life, again with quite a few Jewish inhabitants who decide to settle down or to open their business in Cracow - that thru hundreds of years was considered one of the most important centres of Jewish culture in Europe. Every year, in the turn of June/July the famous Festival of the Jewish Culture takes place in the streets, galleries and squares of Kazimierz, featuring klezmer music concerts, international panels, lectures, exhibitions, plays etc. Music: Abe Schwartz's Orchestra - Yosl, Yosl, Columbia ca 1925

Balabasta: Lighting up Jerusalem's Marketplace |
| |
Artist: Israel MFA | ||
Description: A July festival in the alleyways of the shuk sizzles summer nights with music, art, dance -- and, of course, food. Mahaneh Yehuda, Jerusalem's most colorful "shuk," or marketplace, is usually closed for the evening. But for four Monday nights in July, the Balabasta Festival came to the alleys of the market, courtesy of producer Kobi Frig. In Hebrew, "balabasta" means something like "Come to the market stall." This is not to be confused with the Yiddish "balabusta," meaning "housewife." The festival is an eclectic mix of everything from wild to sophisticated. Weird sculptures are set up on balconies, and Capoeira and waltzing breaks out on the pavement as bands play music on cobblestones and rooftops. Jewish life in Kovno, Riga and Lwรณw, 1939 |
| |
Artist: | ||
Description: A documentary movie: Jewish Life in Kovno (Lithuania), Riga (Latvija) and Lwรณw (Poland) in 1939 NOTE: This documentary movie was made by anonymous author, who shortly before outbreak of the Second World War, so in early spring 1939 (we can see it from the weather and the way people are dressed) travelled probably as a tourist, from the capital of Lithuania (Kovno) and via Latvija (its capital, Riga) down to south-east Poland (Lwow, then belonging to Poland; now in Ukraine). It's a real gem, rarest of the rarest - the last portrait of the East European Slavonic-Jewish world, that in pass of a few months later, was annihilated by the Teutonic aggression on Poland, in September 1939. In my estimation first 3 minutes are: Kovno (Lithuania) and Riga (Latvija) . Poland (Lwow) begins around 4:50. I am guessing only by the view of people's outfits, street signs and posters. The music background are: 1.Belle Baker, Bei mir bist du schoen (1937) followed by 2.: Bublitschki, played by Ziggy Elman Band (1938) 3. Tango โBajka" (A Fairytale) (Music Izaac Kranz, aka Igo Kranowski) played by Wiktor Tychowski's Band (1932; also available in You Tube, sung by Mieczysลaw Fogg http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vatjGxhZqqo) 4. Soul Bigger |

Artist: | ||
Description: Jewish Treats and @JewishTweets want to know if you're ready to make your "Soul Bigger" for the High Holidays? Follow us on Twitter! http://twitter.com/JewishTweets Visit our Facebook Page! http://facebook.com/JewishTreats A Project of the National Jewish Outreach Program (NJOP) http://njop.org Written and Directed by Brian Golub and Mike Kirsch of Unique New York Entertainment http://uniquenewyorkentertainment.com Choreographed by Mike Kirsch Learn more about the 3 T's of the High Holidays, Teshuva (Repentance), Tefilah (Prayer) and Tzedaka (Charity), with this post taken from our http://JewishTreats.org blog: The 3 Ts On Rosh Hashanah we declare: "But repentance, prayer and charity remove the evil of the decree!" In Hebrew, these constitute the 3 Ts: Teshuva, Tefilah and Tzedaka. Teshuva (repentance) a central theme of the High Holidays, means more than just saying "sorry." Teshuva, means recognizing one's errors and making an effort not to repeat them. In many ways, teshuva is a private act because one must be introspective to recognize one's own mistakes. Tefilah (prayer) is the acknowledgment of God as the King and Ruler of the universe. Tefilah is almost private, but not quite. It is a conversation between the person and God. Tzedaka (charity) is a critical step necessary to reverse an evil decree simply because it constitutes an action. The performance of this mitzvah affects the person giving, the person receiving, and its benefits often extend to others as well. Tzedaka is reaching out beyond one's self, and is thus a public act. Everything that a person does affects the world in multiple ways. It affects the person's relationship with him/herself, their relationship with the Divine and their relationship with their fellow human beings. The path to reversing the evil of the decree must therefore involve the private, the spiritual and the public spheres of our lives. Song Lyrics: SOUL BIGGER It's Rosh Hashanah, Oh, So Happy New Year Yeah...had some triflin' days for sure Oh, gotta make my Soul Bigger, Not much time Till Yom Kippur CHORUS: (It's Rosh Hashanah) Now I'm just tryin' to make my Soul Bigger (So happy new year) And I ain't messin' it's no joke joke. Description: http://tinyurl.com/getsee - CLICK TO BUY THE SONG/EP http://tinyurl.com/nucampa CLICK TO BUY THE T-SHIRT BY NU CAMPAIGN * For iTunes downloads, click here - http://bit.ly/lbPnZ3 Artist: Y-Love Song: This is Unity (off the "See Me" EP) Music: Diwon Director: Lenny Bass Label: Shemspeed * sponsored by Shemspeed & Be'Chol Lashon INFO: "This is Unity" is one of the lead singles off Y-Love's "See Me" EP. The "This is Unity" campaign highlights one of humanity's most elusive concepts: Unity. As a result of extremisms and borders of class, race, religion and lifestyle, people have divided themselves into an ever-growing number of categories with which to separate from and label one another. In those categories themselves, we as humans often stereotype and stigmatize those who do not resemble the rest of the category. "This is Unity" is an holistic, anti-bigotry campaign designed to highlight and celebrate diversity. From the music-video featuring Y-Love which highlights Jewish diversity, we hope to encourage a strengthening of Jewish unity and Jewish peoplehood worldwide. Through workshops and projects that bring together artists from different backgrounds to perform in front of varied and mixed audiences, Shemspeed makes its contribution to building bridges between peoples in the hope of encouraging shared experience, constructive dialogue and some impetus for the resolution of some of the world's most pressing disputes. Standing up for what is right in the face of what is wrong with the world -- through love and unity. This is unity, and this is how we at Shemspeed, Be'Chol Lashon & Nu Campaign do it. for additional info, check out: http://shemspeed.com http://thisisylove.com http://diwonmusic.com http://www.bechollashon.org http://www.nucampaign.org
