"Chaverim" (The Jewish unity song) by David Bar-Cohn
    (Video Rated 3 Stars)
    Artist: Shemesh Music
    Description:
"Unity" is not about all of us coming to agreement religiously, politically or otherwise. It's about being able to *disagree* vehemently with someone, and yet still wanting the best for them, desiring their joy and seeking to alleviate their pain. If we can do this, even with our "opponents", not only will this create a culture of solution-building - it will cultivate the possibility for "Chaverim kol Yisrael" - where all Jews look out for one another, as friends do. Song and vocals by David Bar-Cohn Guitar by Bradley Fish Bass Guitar & Drums by David Epstein Produced by Shemesh Music (http://www.shemeshmusic.com) The video was filmed in Jerusalem, Winter 2008, and can be found on the Rebbetzin Tap DVD "Get Ready for Shabbos". (http://www.RebbetzinTap.com) COMMENTS POLICY: Only respectful comments will be posted, and that certainly excludes those denigrating any particular group. In keeping with the theme of the song, I urge you to act as "friends" here :-)

    "Freedom Riders" Trailer
    (Video Rated 3 Stars)
    Artist:
    Description:
"Freedom Riders" comes to AMERICAN EXPERIENCE in May of 2011 In 1961, segregation seemed to have an overwhelming grip on American society. Many states violently enforced the policy, while the federal government, under the Kennedy administration, remained indifferent, preoccupied with matters abroad. That is, until an integrated band of college students—many of whom were the first in their families to attend a university—decided, en masse, to risk everything and buy a ticket on a Greyhound bus bound for the Deep South. They called themselves the Freedom Riders, and they managed to bring the president and the entire American public face to face with the challenge of correcting civil-rights inequities that plagued the nation. Veteran filmmaker Stanley Nelson's inspirational documentary is the first feature-length film about this courageous band of civil-rights activists. Gaining impressive access to influential figures on both sides of the issue, Nelson chronicles a chapter of American history that stands as an astonishing testament to the accomplishment of youth and what can result from the incredible combination of personal conviction and the courage to organize against all odds. Jewish War Heroes of the British Armed Forces (Part 1)
    (Video Rated 3 Stars)
    Artist:
    Description:
This 30 minute film was commissioned out of respect for the tremendous numbers of British Jews who fought and fell for King and Country. Our story begins with battles against the French in 1759, followed by Trafalgar and Waterloo. 55,000 British Jews fought in World War 1. We recount their courage with rarely seen archive film. In World War 2, British Jews fought in disproportionate numbers to their small population: 60,000 of the country's 360,000 Jewish citizens. That's one sixth of all British Jews. This film captures the living testimonies of ex-servicemen and women. These extraordinary people undertook audacious missions whether on the front lines, flying hazardous bombing runs, dodging U-boats or behind enemy lines. Many gave their lives for British values. Our production shows the atrocities of the Holocaust and the British liberation of Belsen-Bergen Death Camp. After the war, British Jews returning from duty were appalled to see Moseley's blackshirts in Britain; and it was British Jews who campaigned to end the threat of fascism once and for all. During National Service and as regular officers, British Jews have fought and fallen alongside their British countrymen: from Cyprus and Korea to the Falklands, Northern Ireland, Afghanistan and Iraq.

Jews & Buddhism: Belief Amended, Faith Revealed
    (Video Rated 3 Stars)
    Artist:
    Description:
This film examines the dramatic surge of interest among American Jews in the spiritual teachings of Buddhism. Jews, who make up 2% of the population, account for some 30% of non-Asian American Buddhists. Many of them are among the leading expositors and scholars of Buddhism in America. In practice, traditional Jewish ritual and liturgy are being modified in synagogues and among individuals seeking to incorporate the teachings of Buddhism into their spiritual lives. Jews and Buddhism is the first film to interrogate in depth the reasons for this phenomenon, explore it in the context of 20th century Jewish-American life, and consider its impact on contemporary Jewish thought and practice. This documentary, named "...one of the outstanding documentaries of 1999." by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, is narrated by Sharon Stone, and includes rare footage of the Dalai Lama, spiritual leader of Tibet, as well as David Ben Gurion, Alan Ginsberg, Sylvia Boorstein, Rabbi Alan Lew, and many others. The film has appeared on PBS and the History channel as well as over 50 film festivals worldwide. In addition, it is in widespread educational distribution.

    Pidyon Haben Ceremony
    (Video Rated 3 Stars)
    Artist:
    Description:
When the first-born baby boy is 30 days old, the pidyon haben (redeeming the son) ceremony takes place. Since the time of the exodus, when the Jewish first born were saved from the plague, they should have dedicated their lives to priestly service in the Temple. The Cohanim from the tribe of Levi took the place of the firstborn in the Temple. So, technically, the first-born must be redeemed by a Cohen for money, otherwise he would technically need to serve in the Temple with the Cohanim. The ceremony is conducted with 5 pieces of silver which are given by the father to the Cohen in order to redeem his son. The Cohen then gives the child a blessing. It is customary to adorn the baby with jewels along with sugar and garlic. Those present will take home the sugar and garlic and cook it in a meal with those who could not attend, and thereby partake in the spiritual merit of the event. As with all Jewish festivities... we end the ceremony with some wine and food! Mazel Tov

    Description:
The Israeli Family Project The Israeli Story that you never heard Our story begins in the summer of 2002. It is this summer that we moved from the big city in the center of Israel to a small village in the Negev Desert. Moshav Kadesh Barnea is a green and beautiful community amidst the colorful desert in the south of Israel. It is where hundreds of acres of fruits and vegetables are grown for market for the whole world. It is where the silence of the desert meets the voices of life. Since moving to Kadesh Barnea in the summer of 2002, we have grown with the village and its people. We built a small factory that produces special jams and chutneys from fresh fruits and vegetables grown by our neighbors. Our girls attended school with our neighbors' children. We played the role of leaders in the community. We joined the social, cultural and educational activities in the village, and added our voice to this unique slice of Israeli life. For visitors from outside the country, our family emerged as the leading representative of the dynamism and liveliness of human life in the Israeli Desert. We wanted to share this wonderful place with others. Over time, thousands of people who have come to visit Israel have come through Kadesh Barnea for a personal meeting with our family. Meeting with us and hearing our story, visitors take a close look at the life of the people who developed this corner of the world. In those meetings our visitors had the chance to learn a contemporary Israeli story. It is a story that they never heard, yet one not unlike so many other inspiring tales in Israel. With us they could feel and understand the values of the Israeli family, through which they could understand the greater story of Israel. During these years we came to understand that the Israeli family story should reach even more people of the world. We want more and more people to hear about beautiful developments right in the heart of the Middle Eastern desert. We want to share our family values and stories about how pioneers fulfilled the dream of making the desert bloom. We are excited to discuss agriculture and entrepreneurship, children and education. Rather than wait for more visitors, we have decided to take our family and our story on a journey around the world. We plan to tell our story in every place we can reach. We will meet with as many people as we can possibly meet. We want to open a window to The Story of The Israeli Family. We will share our story with families all around the world by having meaningful conversations, playing music, reading, cooking and listening. The Israeli Family Journey will take one full year, from August 1, 2011 to August 1, 2012. Our journey will take us through 27 countries in 4 continents. We invite you to meet with us. The "This is Unity" campaign highlights one of humanity's most elusive concepts: Unity. As a result of extremisms and borders of class, race, religion and lifestyle, people have divided themselves into an ever-growing number of categories with which to separate from and label one another. In those categories themselves, we as humans often stereotype and stigmatize those who do not resemble the rest of the category. "This is Unity" is an holistic, anti-bigotry campaign designed to highlight and celebrate diversity. From the music-video featuring Y-Love which highlights Jewish diversity, we hope to encourage a strengthening of Jewish unity and Jewish peoplehood worldwide. Through workshops and projects that bring together artists from different backgrounds to perform in front of varied and mixed audiences, Shemspeed makes its contribution to building bridges between peoples in the hope of encouraging shared experience, constructive dialogue and some impetus for the resolution of some of the world's most pressing disputes. Standing up for what is right in the face of what is wrong with the world -- through love and unity. This is unity, and this is how we at Shemspeed, Be'Chol Lashon & Nu Campaign do it. for additional info, check out: http://shemspeed.com http://thisisylove.com http://diwonmusic.com http://www.bechollashon.org http://www.nucampaign.org
